If you've been googling "what happens during a Brazilian wax" at midnight, you're in the right place. It's one of the most common things first-time clients ask about — and one of the most common reasons people put off booking. Today, let's walk through exactly what you can expect at Honey & Bloom.
Before Your Appointment
The most important thing you can do before your Brazilian wax is let your hair grow out. You need about a quarter inch — roughly the length of a grain of rice — for the wax to grip effectively. If you've been shaving, that usually means waiting two to three weeks after your last shave.
Here's what else to do in the 24 hours before:
- Exfoliate gently in the shower. This lifts dead skin cells so the wax can grab the hair, not the skin.
- Moisturize the day before, but skip lotion on the day of your appointment — moisturized skin can make wax slip.
- Wear loose, comfortable underwear or pants to your appointment. Post-wax, your skin will thank you for the breathing room.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30–45 minutes before if you're sensitive. Ibuprofen is the classic choice.
Nebraska summers are brutal, and Omaha winters are no easier — if you're coming in during a cold snap, know that dry skin can be a bit more sensitive. A little extra hydration in the days leading up helps more than you'd think.
What Happens in the Room
When you arrive at Honey & Bloom, you'll be greeted, brought to a private room, and given a moment to undress from the waist down. There's a drape provided — nothing is more exposed than it needs to be.
Your esthetician will start by cleansing the area, then apply a thin layer of pre-wax oil. This creates a barrier between the wax and your skin, which makes the whole experience more comfortable.
We use honey-based hard wax — not the old-school strip wax you might be imagining. Hard wax grips the hair, not the skin, and it's removed without a strip, which means less trauma to the skin. Most clients are genuinely surprised by how manageable it is.
The process takes 20–30 minutes for most people. You'll feel pulling sensations — it's honest work — but it's fast. Your esthetician will work methodically, letting you know what's coming next.
Right After: The First 24 Hours
Your skin will be pink and sensitive immediately after. That's completely normal — it's a fresh wax, not a sunburn, and it fades quickly.
What to avoid for the first 24 hours:
- Hot baths, saunas, or hot tubs
- Tight clothing that rubs the area
- Sun exposure or tanning beds
- Heavy exercise (sweat + friction isn't your friend right now)
- Scented lotions or products in the area
What to do: keep it cool, wear breathable fabric, and skip the gym until tomorrow. A cold compress is fine if you're particularly sensitive.
It Gets Easier Every Time
Here's what most first-timers don't know: the first Brazilian is usually the most intense. Once you're on a regular 4–6 week schedule, the hair grows back finer and the wax experience becomes noticeably more comfortable. Your hair follicle actually weakens over time with repeated waxing.
Omaha summers are the season when most people finally decide to start — but the clients who keep it consistent year-round are the ones who tell us, "I can't believe I waited so long."
